MacArthur was never going to use nukes. That's not compatible with his personality.

Eh. Not really. He was aggressive, but he was also sentimental. If given complete control over weapons and operations, including the use of atomic bombs, he would have conducted the Korean campaign as it was conducted in real life. MacArthur would have viewed nuclear weapons as excessively destructive, and would have (correctly) recognized that any use of nuclear weapons in warfare would lead to a world-war with the Soviet Union.

The whole "Truman had to cut MacArthur loose because he was a rabid dog!" thing is thus a historic myth.

If this sounds like I'm a MacArthur apologist on par with that weirdo on the Straight Dope Message Board who obsessively defends McClellan, that's not really it. Truman fired MacArthur because of subtle differences of doctrine; it had no dramatic Reddit-tier reasons like "MacArthur wanted to use nukes but the president didn't!! OMG!! Click here for Rage: Ally Poker Shallowd Legebn"
