Both my grandpa's served in that war. One of them burned gooks with a flamethrower. Can you imagine how fricked up that must make a person? Hearing them burn alive.
It's for getting guys who are in bunkers. Maybe they've only got a little slit a couple inches wide they're shooting out of. You spray burning liquid all over it and some of it gets through.
Flamethrowers get people out of holes and fortifications protected by stuff that makes it difficult to approach or blow up.
Today, flamethrowers have been replaced by thermobaric grenades and rockets, that do similar damage in enclosed spaces but are far less dangerous to the user
