semi-related, the guy who flew the enola gay got in trouble for recreating the bombing of hiroshima in 1976

In 1976, Tibbets piloted a restored B-29 that dropped a simulated, miniature atomic bomb at an air show in Texas. The reenactment, complete with a little mushroom cloud, prompted a protest from Japan. Tibbets called the Japanese reaction "ridiculous," but U.S. government officials apologized.

he also never felt any guilt over the bombing

To the end of his days, Paul Warfield Tibbets Jr. believed that dropping the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima was a justifiable means of shortening World War II and preserving the lives of hundreds of thousands of American servicemen who military experts said might have died in a final Allied invasion of Japan.

"I never lost a night's sleep over it," Tibbets said of the Aug. 6, 1945, attack.

He said he wasn't proud of all the death and destruction at Hiroshima, but he was proud that he did his job well.

To begin with, they were murdering people every day in China on Holocaust levels. This guy saved more lives than anyone else in history.

In retrospect, what if instead we'd let them kill more Chinese in order to ensure a future with no anime AND a capitalist China? :marseyhmm:

One of the real big what ifs in history is what if Japan had been beaten before the huge offensive in 1944 that pretty much destroyed the KMT. If it wasn't for that, China would have never gone commie and they'd probably be making movies that aren't total shit now. Or was it Zhang Yimou's horrible experiences in the Cultural Revolution that made him creative? :marseyhmmm:

Made by Zhang Yimou. Good movie but I prefer his earlier works like The Story of Qiu Ju. :marseycool2:

What the frick happened to Asia? Theirs just not any good movies from them anymore. They should've had so much going for them.

I want to see more movies about Asians being really good at being Asian.

Mainland Chinese movies all have some kind of pro-china message, which really stifles creativity / universal appeal imo. Still, there are a few good directors like Zhang Yimou

Taiwan and HK movies are great (imo) but they have very low budgets. South Korea has some good ones, and they're ruthless capitalists so the production value is typically pretty good. And Japan, obviously, has some decent stuff, mostly anime.

I thought the mainland had a large population. How do you have a low budget movie industry? Did they give your tax money to the moon probe or w/e they're sending up there?

The mainland has decent budgets but they're all dedicated to wolf warrior or ancient Chinese history movie #81, and they're very niche from a global market perspective.

It really is unreal how evil they were. During the liberation of the Philippines, 10,000 jap Marines basically deserted to hole up in manilla and massacre 100,000 civilians before it was recaptured. They would do things like lock civilians in hospitals and blow them up. It's not even like this was a top down thing, they wanted to tape and murder so badly.

"Violent mutilations, r*pes, and massacres occurred in schools, hospitals and convents"

:marseyfamily: My maternal grandpappy was a marine under MacArthur over here in the Philippines and in Okinawa during the war. I shared some pics last year. !Pinoypride

While I still think targeting civilians is an intrinsically evil act, neither my family or the in-laws have ever spoken positively about the Japs. :marseyembrace:

Omnicidal anti-human demon worshippers burned away in atomic fire :marseyshrug:

My grandfather was a Marine during WW2 as well. He never ate rice after that until the day he died of melanoma, and he would celebrate VJ day every year with a tall glass of scotch neat

When mine returned he continued to love SOS "shit on a shingle" (creamed chip beef in cream on toast) and Vienna sausages for the rest of his life, and got a real kick out of introducing the grandkids to those WW2 MRE staples and seeing us actually enjoy them. :marseywholesome:

If the bombs had targeted military sites I wouldn't have mixed feelings, but it's tribalism rather than consistent morality to condemn Nazi/Jap atrocities and excuse Allied ones. We didn't even issue the standard warning period like in other firebombing campaigns.

It was a global total war with ongoing industrial scale genocide. Each day it dragged on was condemning at minimum thousands more to die daily. In that scenario the civilian populace of the perpetrating nations were legitimate and proportionate military targets.

It's my heresy, and you're not going to change my mind on this one :marseyburn:

I also find Peter 2:18 objectionable if you want a fun one. New age translations will make it nicer by replacing slave with servant :marseyselfimmolation:

The Battle of Manila should never have happened, to begin with, but Yamashita's r-slurred Nip subordinate disobeyed orders to vacate the city and dug in. Thus, Manila became the second most destroyed city in the war, after Warsaw, and Yamashita got the rope.

Because of that alone, LeMay should have authorized atomic blanketing of the entire Japanese archipelago and allowed the gooks and chinks to rampage after the clouds have dissipated for Total Jap Death

They're right because there is some probability >0 that none of them would've died while taking over their motherland.
