Cell phones were only just starting to become commonplace, but only rich kids had good ones. Cell phone use was 100% banned for all students. It was treated the same as having a Game Boy in class. You were an idiot if you flashed it in class because it would either get stolen or hijacked by the teachers.
It is UNREAL to me; absolutely incomprehensible even, that cell phones were EVER allowed for widespread student use.
We were allowed cellphones at school, but they were strictly prohibited from being turned on, and only during emergencies - if the teacher caught your phone ringing, you either got detention or a fine, depending on the humourlessness of the specific hag.
2001 barely any phones...the ones we did have were those nextel i1000, with the walkie talkie built in...we only used them in school during our free periods to frick with our friends that had classes...
teachers had no idea what to do at that time...we only really used them to find out where everyone was gonna meet to smoke or drink...
Everyone moved onto blackberries as email and text started to grow...nextel was bought out by sprint i believe, but the walkie talkie aspect when the way of smoke signals...the only people that still used them past 2015 were people that worked outdoors in areas with no cell signal...
Walkie talkies were so much better than calling or texting. I miss that shit so bad...

I blame the office workers being r-slurs. At my school they failed to pass messages between kids and their parents so often everyone just cut them out of the loop and started calling one another directly
Y-y-you don't get it, there is an 85% chance they'll be involved in a school shooting and they won't be able to text me "Momma they a skibidi rizzless susneighbor with a gyatt here shooting us n sheeeitt" before they get capped

The problem with turning them off was you wouldn't get a notification if you were called. It was better to put it on silent.

Colleges are now making students take classes on how to interact with people in person. I literally laughed out loud when I was told this in person.
