>From what I heard, the American obsession with "thinness" of women became a thing in the mid nineteenth century. Fat bodies, became associated with, poorer, less educated, darker skinned people who had less education and (were presumed to have) less control of their appetites and sexuality. Thinness became associated with more educated women, who were (presumed to have) better control of their appetites and sexuality.
