Company is "upgrading" us to sit to stand desks soon
My office managers just announced that they are replacing all of our desks at work with sit to stand desks and I can't shake this anxious feeling I have about it. Everyone is so excited except me…
Obviously, I know that I do not have to use the stand feature and could sit at the desk at all times like normal. But I'm just imagining the office full of people athletically standing at times throughout the day, whereas I will be sitting down in my chair the entire time. I know this sounds silly but it just seems like yet another thing that will call attention to my size.
Sorry if this is just the most minor thing, but I hoped I could share it with folks who may understand.

30k steps a day will burn calories.

Walking can burn a minor amount of calories but it's basically worthless compared to high intensity exercise
A half hour of tough lifting is worth more than a day's gentle walking

Youre burning abour 40 calories per 1k steps. 30k steps a day is 1200 calories burned. That is a fairly decent amount of calories burned for someone that otherwise might not be working out.

How practical is 30k steps? I've worked on solar fields and didn't hit that number.

I hit it in the warehouse every day

Every warehouse worker says "muh walking 15 miles at work" and all of them are fat fricks who get dusted on a 3 mile hike with minimal elevation gain. Drive literally an hour east from your suburban Portland shithole and hike a 1-day 30-miler on the PCT south of Mt Hood, literally the easiest section of the whole trail, and tell me how you feel after that

I don't think 30k steps is 30 miles of hiking for literally anybody ever. Maybe if you were running the whole time?

It's pretty difficult, I've done it before once or twice but the first time was a 30k hike and the second was I ran a half marathon and did some additional walking throughout the day. It's pretty hard to do casually

Still doesn't make it exercise If you run, you get faster. If you lift, you get stronger. No matter how much you walk, you aren't really gonna get better at walking, assuming you have a somewhat normal physique already.

Lmao this is an r-slured take.
Walking for two hours burns way more calories than being sedentary for two hours, but guess what, with a base level of fitness you don't even feel like you've exercised.
This is just not true you clearly don't have any data. Walking should be a part of everyone's daily life. The lack of walking in modern life is a large part of why the recommended calorie intakes are so out of date now.

My job did a "fitness challenge" for steps with teams over a week as a covid thing and I thought I had a good group of athletic dudes, but we got dusted by HR women who did nothing but walk around their neighborhoods "making calls" on airpods while we had actual meetings and had to be at the desk all day

My employer had a similar program. The "challenge" is handled through Virgin Pulse and it uses your fitbit data to track.
The only reason I started wearing a fitbit was because it's the easiest way to get the minimum number of points for an insurance discount + cash bonuses. Last year my wife and I redeemed the bonuses to buy a new grill
Edit: just logged in for the first time this year. Already earned double the requirement, and by next week I'll have a $100 gift card earned. I don't even have this thing tracking sleep.

They already added fricking walking to the olympics.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racewalking
even on the wiki page you can see how bullshit it is
You're supposed to keep a foot on the ground at all times, but bro in front DEFINITELY has both feet off the ground. The whole thing is r-slurred because unless you make them wear special shoes that detect contact w/ the ground, there's zero possible way to actually stop people from cheating.
