I just got into a discussion about this. The big fear campaign against aspartame (which was Splenda at the time, now they use sucralose) still has effects twenty years later, despite the fact that artificial sweeteners have gotten so much better.
Erythritol is a natural sugar alcohol. Allulose is literally sugar with no glycemic impact. Stevia and monk fruit are mid but they work in a lot of dishes.
I don't understand why a large mass of people still think aspartame is the only thing out there.

Am I the only one who absolutely hates artificial sweeteners? They taste like shit. And the taste lingers on your tongue and you almost have to wash it off by drinking water. Aspartame and sucralose are by far the worst, Stevia is better but still bad
I hate that sugar is being phased out in favour of sweeteners. I'm not obese, I can watch how much sugar I intake, I don't need you to mix sweeteners into my drink

Sweeteners are done. The new wave is to just not make the drink sweet at all. Flavoured water.

Yeah I absolutely agree that drinking sugar free stuff is the best option. I used to drink quite a lot of soft drinks, especially in summer, but have been phasing them out for water. If I want something more interesting I either make myself some low-sugar lemonade with different citruses (citri?) and fizzy water, or have a beer

I find that not all of them work for me. Most do but whatever is in Pepsi Max almost makes me gag.

To be honest most of my friends don't have such extreme reaction as I do, but I swear I can be drunk and still tell you whether my coke and whiskey was made with proper cola or diet one
Or if this orange juice I bought at the store is just orange and sugar or if it is "enhanced" with an additional sweetener

Try allulose, it's literally a natural sugar. I can't tell the difference at all.

Was it ever confirmed that aspartame was bad for people? Thought it was just bad for rats or w/e

Yes, and the science is incontrovertible. Sugar is poison, aspartame is worse. Just eat fruit if you want something sweet.

I have a friend who does immunology research and he avoids aspartame because from his experience he believes there is a non-zero chance that it is carcinogenic. It's just his personal belief of course, he says that there haven't been many good studies on it, but his behaviour has rubbed on me. You know, when a guy with a phD who does this shit for a living actively avoids something but tells you that it's "probably ok" it's difficult to not start being cautious

The problem with sweeteners is they lack the potent flavor enhancing qualities of sucrose.
If you just want something to taste sweet, they work. But usually you want things to taste good too.

Xylitol is the best tasting one imo. However Xylitol and Erythritol have some side effects on the gut biome, so only have it in moderation and avoid if you already have digestive issues.
Monk Fruit is the best in terms of health, but it is extremely expensive and often sold mixed with other sweeteners.
Allulose is most likely safe, but it might cause muscle fatigue so body builders should avoid it.
Aspartame is super sketchy, avoid at all costs.
