If you hate calorie counting to lose weight, try keto

I’ve been cooking for myself since I was 5 years old, which means my relationship with food is based on a 5 year-old’s heuristic understanding of a balanced diet. Could I have tried to learn some actual dietary fundamentals in the past 25 years? Sure, but my understanding of healthy is “am I still frickable” and that’s been affirmed (sometimes unfortunately) over the timespan.

Well now I’m 30, and the cycle of going 20 pounds over and then crash-dieting back to normal has gotten harder. My usual go-tos of cereal, sandwiches and rice-heavy stir fry has been making it really hard to keep pounds off as I work out less.

So a friend I was trying to have s*x with recommended keto and showed me recipes she’s been trying out, and so I gave it a shot.

Night and goddarn day. It’s only been a few weeks and I’ve had to cut coffee for black tea since I have too much energy now. I don’t feel like a bloated sack of shit if I don’t make dinner before 5pm anymore. And the best part is I haven’t bothered calorie counting. I’ve had MyFitnessPal, a food scale, heavily-invested into CICO through my 20s, where I’d go from 2500 calories a day to 1400 for a few weeks to carve off pounds. And it works, but going to bed hungry sucks. And when I finally am getting laid, why bother continuing to do it?

I’ve not counted once with Keto and I just feel good all the time. Probably shaving off 2-3 pounds a week, including this last week where I’ve been on bedrest with a back injury.

Anyway, tell me about your experiences with the diet too. Getting a lot of value out of my $70 air fryer.

I’ve not been able to keep a consistent workout plan since Covid. Finally got back into a routine last month and then I fricked up my back over the 4th. I feel too young for this shit.

Tore my ACL. MCL and Meniscus my freshman year of HS. Six surgeries since, I know dat feel. Try some core training vids of youtube for a month (every three days at first, work your way up, focus on form) and jog every day, start with a half mile at easy pace and don't up the distance until you are running at least a 4 minute half mile. You can mix in a few pushups here too.

Once you can maintain a 4 minute half mile, do a set of 50 pushups, and complete a 10 minute core workout daily (without your abs hurting like a b-word) then start your workout routine.

Developing your core is game changing. I used to get a lot of back pain but now that I've been doing some core focused lifting I never have any issues.

Heck yea, will do. Thankfully my injuries are never severe but I always overdo it the beginning thinking I can take two weeks to return to my college routine. I’m horrible pacing my running since I just want to go faster if I got the lung capacity, since that was my only bottleneck when I was younger.

yeah you gotta have a decent base before doing anything, and remind yourself to go slow. add a rep instead of adding five lbs from time to time will force you not to overdo it.

Keto is just calorie counting with extra steps. I like cheese and meat though so it gets the edge over intermittent fasting

I go with IF because i'm smol and can't eat over ~1500 calories a day without chunking up. It's usually cheese and meat tho.

2-3 lb a week

Uhhhh so you’re running a 7000 to 10500 kcal deficit weekly? You are either VERY overweight or you’re at the stage at the beginning of ketosis where you lose a lot of water weight if you don’t hydrate more.

I just don’t like a lot of fruits and vegetables. I snack on berries and bananas throughout the day, but melons, grapefruit, even strawberries taste bad to me. Can’t stand carrots either. But brusselsprouts, cauliflower, spinach and onions are great and I keep plenty in my diet.

The girl I’m trying to get it in with is full carnivore which is batshit to me but on brand for her.

She’s smart in some areas and gullible everywhere else. She saw one video she now references as gospel with a dietician who said that plants secrete poison to survive evolutionarily and are therefore not good for you. I, in my desperate for kitty voice, asked about plants that required animals to eat them to germinate, and she said that it wasn’t covered in the video.

I don’t know how she remains this fit, doe-eyed beach blonde when her diet is 80% red meat but she looks as good as she did when I met her 10 years ago.

Did keto for 5 weeks and it was indeed a huge mood and energy booster. Alas, I gave in and wanted pizza one weekend. lol I keep carbs down best I can but have loosened up my diet a bit since I work out a lot every day. If I went back to a wagie job, I would likely go back to low carbs.

Those eggs are perfect btw!

Just spent two weeks with my family eating and drinking all day, so today is day 1 back in the habit and losing the bloat and weight I probably put on. When you go back to large amounts of carbs, you always feel like shit and I do right now. Got like 3 days of this before it goes away.

Yea, I’m going up to Alaska in a few weeks to hike/kayak etc but also to daydrink since “daydrinking” in the Alaskan summer is drinking anytime before 11pm.

Worried I’m gonna break the diet even if I’m not craving anything right now. When I lived in Juneau there was this incredible waffle place, Russian dumplings, and a frickton of distilleries. Gonna give myself some grace here but I’m hoping I don’t overdo it on vacation and making coming back to earth much harder.

Even better just only have two meals a day and skip snacks. Unless you are eating something insane you’ll be under 2000

When I was purely CICO dieting I did that with three meals a day. Aiming for 400, no more than 600. But I always hungry and counting the hours before the next meal. I wanted to try a diet I could graze on, which would make counting more annoying. So this time around I’m focusing on what the food is with “how much” being secondary.

I don’t expect it to be as successful but the goal is sticking on the diet for longer than I normally do.

I do limited keto, no pasta as that caused me to overeat, and intermittent fasting. It's been pretty easy to maintain weight since starting that and I'm in the best shape of my life even now that I'm post wall.

As a former fat, keto isn't sustainable. The only people who talk about keto are fats, because they tried it and lost 30 pounds only for it to come back.

My advice is run or swim an hour a day (biking isn't exercise), do some form of lifting even if it's just body weight.

People feel good when they start keto because they've cut out the goy slop and shit carbs.

Cut out shit carbs, keep eating taters and most importantly commit to an hour of aerobic exercise everyday that isn't riding a bike because that's not exercise.

I did it for 7 months about 3 years ago. Lost 30 pounds. I was counting calories while I was doing it as well, I was aiming at about 1200 calories a day at the time.

I liked the diet because I don't have much of a sweet tooth anyway, so cutting sugar was easy. I also like to cook, which I feel is entirely necessary for that diet, there is no way you're going to cut your carbs enough if you eat out all the time because you have so little control over what's in your food at a restaurant.

I eventually stopped doing it for the same reason everyone stops doing fad diets after a while, it just gets exhausting to keep up with, but if I ever want to drop some weight in a short time again, I'll consider it.

Jump in the discussion.

Yea, being forced to cook has been great. Sometimes it’s just throwing proteins and brusselsprouts in an air fryer for 10 minutes, but I’ve not ordered out in a month beside a few dates at restaurants that generally have keto options since SoCal is the Mecca of fad dieting.
