I was watching Salesman (1969) about bible salesman going door to door in the 60s and it's all women at home by themselves during the day, and all they do is seem to sit there, and smoke, and are just happy to have company and someone to talk too. Almost always with a kid running around or a grandma. They had plenty of time to learn to cook before in between doing nothing.
We really did go through a major cultural upheaval and it really only fully got adopted w/ millenials
