Because they last forever. A friend has a KitchenAid mixer from like the 60s or 70s that is still chugging along. Plus stand mixers are good for laziness.

Edit: other comments in this thread are saying the new ones suck and only the old ones are good. apparently if you want one, buy an older model used.

Sounds like a lot of things: if you want a good quality appliance that will last you a lifetime, buy a second hand one on eBay for 1/4 the price of a new one.
