It doesn't surprise me that a good portion of this community is transphobic with how it treats non-weight loss posts : GlowUps

The original idea of this sub was for people improving their looks by their own standards and posting themselves, before and after with their confidence boost. Its not just about weight loss, it literally says it in the community rules. Any time I see someone (mostly women) post a glow up where they did not lose weight, they get a shit ton of comments saying “not a glow up, you just changed your hair and put on makeup.” If changing your appearance and gaining confidence because of it isn't a glow up, then what is? I also see a lot of posts (mostly from women) where the original picture is a child and the contemporary picture is an adult. These posts are usually bombarded with comments saying “this is just a grow up not a glow up.” If changing your appearance over time and gaining confidence because of it isn't a glow up, then what is? Finally we have the weight loss posts. Consistently upmarseyd and not a negative comment in sight even on the posts from women. Weight loss posts are universally accepted as a glow up because people in this community equate being thin with being attractive. Then we have that trans woman who posted today where the comments bullied her into deleting her account. I'm not calling anyone out by username but these are the same people that comment positive things on weight loss posts and shame non-weight-loss posts. These people just want to see weight-loss, not people experiencing gender euphoria and confidence. This sub is meant to encompass the domains of other subs like /r/weightloss and /r/transtimelines not gatekeep the definition of a glow up.

Isn't a "glow-up" just a nice/gay zoomer way of saying going from a nottie to a hottie? :!marseytrain:s make themselves look worse almost 100% of the time.

Obligatory :marseytransat#tentionseeker:

:marseyjanny2: weighs in:

Nicely put. This is why I leave posts up from people who are sharing about their gender transition but I lock them to avoid collecting negative comments. If anyone would like to make a post and they're not wanting to receive negative comments, I will gladly lock it for them.

I lock the fishing for complements post so you can't get complements or insults :marseyclueless:

We have some dissenters:

Mental illness isn't a glow up [removed comment]

no it isnt and even if it was how are we to treat it? Maybe some super advanced brain surgery that removes gender dysphoria. But we don't have that answer yet. So what do we do for all the trans people in the meantime. Well, we know gender affirmation therapy for their assigned gender does not help these individuals. Gender affirmation for their preferred gender has proven to help their mental health over time. Maybe we should do that one then?

I don't care what that random link says. If a boy thinks he's a girl, there is a mental condition occurring

Ok we'll go with your definition for the sake of the argument. What are we to do to treat these individuals?

Who cares? :marseychadfoid: They chose to ostracize themselves in society not the other way around.

And the sneed keeps going for a while from here.

It's a sub called GlowUp. You're gonna have everyone give an opinion based on their personal rubric. It aggregates. Some people don't find some things attractive or an improvement on aesthetics. You're not gonna shame someone into liking something. You can shame them into not saying certain things, maybe, but let's not forget this is Reddit.

I'm not unsympathetic at times, but I'm also not sympathetic to this. I genuinely don't care. Most all of us assess posts on an individual basis and speaking for myself, that's not gonna change.

Not every corner of Reddit has to be grounds for social experimentation or conflict. We're here to affirm if someone's had a GlowUp from our own subjective criteria.

PS - As to bullying, call it out, note it to the mods

I had my own disagreement with someone being a peepee

But I am genuinely concerned that just because people don't affirm transitioning as attractive doesn't automatically make them transphobes or this sub as anti-trans. People are allowed to like what they like and they don't have to like other things.

commenting vile hate on transition posts isn't “something you don't like” it's being a peepee. trans people exist, cry about it.

Who's crying here?

This sub is meant to encompass the domains of other subs

Is this not also gatekeeping?

You are not the arbiter of what a glow-up is. Everyone has a different definition and you don't have to like it, but you can't change it either. That's life.

Being accepting of everyone is the definition of inclusivity which is the opposite of gatekeeping. What the sub is meant for isn't necessarily the definition of a glow up its just literally what the mods made this sub for.

Reminds me of a quote by Confucius:

"The :mars#eytrain: and the :marseyga#tekeeper2: are natural enemies. The gate will stop the slow moving train, but give it sufficient momentum and the gatekeeper will be destroyed."
