Most of the time my t-shirts degrade in like 5-10 years, start getting holes, get too thin, stretched out, etc. I have one t-shirt though that I wear moderately regularly that's still going strong after 20. It wasn't high quality or expensive or anything I have no idea what the deal is. I got it for "free" at a football camp I went to in high school. It doesn't have any holes, it's probably thinned out but not too bad, and the collar or anywhere else hasn't stretched out at all. I don't know what sort of technology was used to create this super shirt but I wish I could find out and have all my shirts last this long.
i've been wearing a t-shirt for over 20 years now and it's still in great shape

I don't know what it is about some old shirts like this, but they have remarkable staying power, especially compared to newer ones. I've got two polo shirts from my high school (which without revealing how old I actually am was 20+ years ago) that are still as good as the day I got them, fit perfectly, no stains, no stretches, nothing. (My Catholic all-guy school only let us wear polos on Fridays, otherwise we had to wear shirts and ties, and the shirts could only be white, blue, or yellow). I got a Chicago Police 1996 Democratic Convention shirt from my folks - both are retired cops - that is also holding strong; the slogan on the back is still readable ("We kicked your father's butt in 1968, wait until you see what we do to you."). There was a shirt I got at my college orientation that has lettering fading, but is still holding strong. Meanwhile, this hoddie I got 1L - the youngest of all of these - started breaking down at the molecular level within months.
The only shirt I've found nowadays that has this kind of staying power are the white T-shirts made by Kirkland and sold at Costco. Plus, the collars on those stay flat and are perfect to wear under my dress shirts.
(Sorry for the blog, I'm sitting at the dealer waiting on my truck to finish getting serviced.)
