heres the autism way to go
go to your closest dept store that carries designer scents and samples too (think ck, dior, versace etc) and sample the designer scents 
or you go online buy like 20-30 1ml decants of the top shelf stuff you cant find easily, then pick the ones you like from there. then you're gonna go to fragrantica website and put in the ones you like. it will give you a full breakdown of the notes of the cologne and if theres a note you like or you want to express more you can find other colognes with the same note inside. Then you start getting scents for specific motifs. You can have a scent for the seasons 
and some for date nights at different establishments 
Also, if you know where to look online you can get 100ml bottles for cheaper than retail price.
but i personally like d&g the one intense, mont blanc explorer, molecule 01, serge lutens chergui, and tauer l'air du desert morocain. Some decants, some bottles.
