UPDATED with more titles being removed: Disney is starting to pull content from streaming, with dozens of series and specials slated to leave Disney+ and Hulu on May 26, Deadline has learned. The titles, which are being removed from Disney’s streaming services globally, include Disney+’s Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society and The World According to Jeff Goldblum and Hulu’s Y: The Last Man, Dollface, The Hot Zone, Maggie, Pistol and Little Demon.

The list features largely short-lived series, specials and direct-to-streaming movies.

The move, which comes with a content impairment charge of $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion, was announced during the recent Disney earnings call on May 10.

“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” CFO Christine McCarthy said. At the time, no details were provided on the content that would be removed.

Disney is the latest media company to purge content from its streaming platforms in a cost-cutting measure as the industry is rethinking costs and strategy in that arena with a renewed focus on profitability. Warner Bros. Discovery removed a slew of series from HBO Max, with AMC and Showtime also undergoing a similar scale back.

Was this really a show? Has anyone here watched it?

Hollywood is the pretty much the only media industry that still puts DRM on everything. For audiobooks, music, games, and ebooks, its easy to get DRM-free stuff you actually own. There's something wrong with movie consumers in particular.

Weird, my plex server doesn't have DRM on anything :marseypirate:

Jump in the discussion.

Yeah, I don't think the DRM has ever once got in the way for movies or TV shows.

Games, on the other hand, are where it's effective. If a game has Denuvo and the empress doesn't feel like cracking it, it's locked up.

Don't the publishers get some kind of kickback/royalty from DVD/BR players for the DRM, though?

I downloaded it :marseypirate: because I don't have D+ and I'm a glutton for punishment.

I made it about 2/3 of the way through the first episode before I closed the player and used File Shredder on the download folder.

Sounds like they are taking down shows with big actors or runners they’d have to pay royalties to. It’s cheaper to take it off than run shitty shows

Piracy is more justified than ever, and the average r-slur doesn't know how, they literally think, if they can't find it on a streaming service, it's no where. I feel like more people knew how to pirate in the early 2ks. Literally all my school mates did.

Jump in the discussion.

It's baffling how few people know how to pirate. And it's not like the information is secretly guarded either. The barrier to entry is almost non-existent.

People are just lazy and would rather b-word that their latest capeshit isn't on their streaming app.

Jump in the discussion.

Streamlining day-to-day activities compared to that of the 90s has made people r-slurred with no abstract thinking skills. If it isn't there in an app or service or some bullshit, it doesn't exist. Plus the sanitsation of the internet making it difficult for normies to find their way onto "underground" websites.

Jump in the discussion.

All you piracycels who use public trackers have no business trashing streaming. Go enjoy your shit quality rips with a variety of incomprehensible file naming schema stuffed into that extra HDD on your desktop. Privatetrackercels, on the other hand, are :marseygigachad:, especially if they have a dedicated NAS computer (not one of those shitty all-in-ones) w/ 40+ TB and an organized Plex setup. Bonus points for ZFS.

I set up sonarr yesterday and it's so cool, can't believe I was ever using Plex without this

I'm a publictrackercel tho :ashamed: I didn't really pirate much for a couple years and now I don't even know what people use. Having low standards is kinda nice :marseyblush: but curious what you'd recommend

Unfortunately I'm not a member of any private trackers. I used to be a member of IPtorrents a couple years ago (not really a private tracker but better than piratebay) but my membership expired due to not signing on regularly enough, so now I just don't torrent.

Limewire and Napster were much easier than running a tor client and bittorrent. Combine that with everyone getting lazy since there was a period where streaming actually had a lot of content in one place.

love in the time of corona

Wow what a wonderful piece of media, what a shame it’s gone

Jump in the discussion.

That one irritates me, since Love in the Time of Cholera wasn't actually about cholera. It was a pun. The doctor, Urbino, dedicates himself to eradicating cólera (disease), which causes him to neglect his wife, Fermina, thereby eliminating her cólera (rage/passion). Cholera could've been replaced with literally any other disease and nothing about the book would've changed. García Márquez just liked wordplay. :marseysneed:

But I guess that basic literary knowledge is beyond Disney's writers and viewers alike. :marseydisney:

The scene with all the patients violently pooping (the best scene) wouldn't have been there if it were any other disease

Can someone explain to me why Disney would remove these? I haven't seen any of them but I didn't get the impression they were offensively bad, is the reputational damage from having a few stinkers on D+ that big of a deal? Maybe there are some contractual/financial incentives I'm not seeing?

Disney plus is hemorrhaging a shit ton of money and a lot of streaming residuals aren’t actually based on current viewership but rather it’s usually based on the subscriber number and their original pay. So there’s a very real chance that Disney paid a bunch of money to Warwick to get him back for Willow expecting it to be a hit and even after it bombed and had no one watching it, they were still having to pay residuals to him as if was a hit. Same for any of the other cast and crew that would get residuals.

And residuals aren’t really cheap. Like if you look at the current WGA residuals that they’re currently striking over for not being enough, Disney would have paid over 17k an episode just to the writers if they kept the show for another 6 months just in America. Over another 15k an episode if they wanted to have it stream to foreigners too.

Like imagine paying over 200k to the writers of fricking Willow so a couple dozen weirdos can rewatch a garbage fire a couple more times and a handful of people can drop it after episode 1 for another year.

Residuals are a genuinely r-slurred system. Only im creative weirdo world do you continue to get paid for a service you provided years after you completed.

Jump in the discussion.

Hosting content costs big money (AWS aint cheap) + residuals are a b-word.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Hosting is cheap as shit, if it's just storage. Users pay a monthly fee, which more than pays for the cost of serving up some goyslop. It's the residuals that they don't want to give up, now that the pie is so tiny.

Don't forget to turn off signatures in settings!

It’s likely all licensing/royalties, the accountants :marseymerchant: nooticed some cost more than they are worth and who cares about legacy fans who like bad stuff not making them money

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Probably something related to the ongoing writers strike.

It's a message to the writers along the lines of 'half of what you write is so shit that it actually costs us money to serve it to customers, so we're deleting it, now let that sink in.'

Just off the top of my head...

I watch a ridiculous amount of television. Like, way too much. I have a lot of long commutes (hour+) and my work pays for data so thats how I spend them. I watch television nobody has ever heard of and the quality of which will make you retch CONSTANTLY. And yet, still, I have never even HEARD of any of these shows, literally any of them, except the Y: Man in a Ladies World one. How is this even possible? It's like 30 shows!!!

Tbh i dont really get why they would pull things from streaming, unless they want to create hype later down the road when they announce the return of those shows, but apparently they're all bottom shelf trash. Streaming services make money by offering a lot of content, so even shitty filler thats not actually intended to be watched has its purpose, its like stocking a shelf with fake food just so it looks like the shelves are full.
