This is incorrect and is only worthy of consideration because it finally puts to bed the TOTALLY FRICKING SOUL AND NARRATIVE RUINING NOTION RIDLEY SCOTT HAS PUSHED THAT DECKARD WAS A REPLICANT.
Holy frick I would assassinate Ridley in Minecraft if I could dive down past the jelly of his fricking ego to explain that what made Batty's sacrifice so brilliant not only in the moment but also its delivery was the promise of the Tyrell corporation's motto — MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN — Batty became more human than human in the moment he saved the life of his hunter. In that world of shit, he was the MOST HUMAN of them all.
Turns my stomach that Final Cut included those fricking unicorn scenes (shot for a totally different film).
Regardless, the OG is better because even tho 2049 is a GREAT film, it hasn't moved the needle culturally in terms of how OTHER sci-fi writers and directors have considered the media.
Blade Runner and its marriage of Chinatown meets Alien single fricking handedly created an entire SEVERAL genres of new fiction and influenced visuals for generations.
Also, as much as I genuinely do love 2049, the Jared Leto character was just written as a villain. I wish they'd softened him a bit in that scene when he kills the “newborn”, but he was so ruthless it just makes you see him as one dimensional. He should have cried, which might have explained why Love cries— she “learned it” from him. And maybe he cries all the time for seemingly no reason (depression) and she is trying / learning to mimic those emotions
Yea that character could've used a lot more subtlety. Practically every action of his just screams 'look at me I control life and death I'm literally a god, do you get it yet?'
If he cries every time he “must” kill a newborn because they did not contain a fruitful womb, him crying as a God for failing to create life in the face of his own creation (Love), it would explain why she cries- mimicking a feeling that exists between two opposing viewpoints. Doublethink is impossible for robots- that's what the Voight-Kampff tests always inteded to prove, and that's exactly why they fail.
Edit - in other words, the only real reason his creations haven't evolved wombs is because he continues to directly interfere. He's fricking with their ability to develop their own emotional response because they're beholden to his.

I mean I liked them but I don't understand the consistent GOAT placement people give them, they didn't really seem like anything special. Definitely good, but lots of things are good. 2049 was three fricking hours long for some reason.
i actually think 2049 was the counterpoint to star wars tfa insofar as ford's character actually was central to the plot and had his own development. putting him on all the marketing was fricking gay though
Nerds need to be bullied to suicide. Harrison ford is good, but nerds have made everything he's in need to have way more screentime of him than is good for the movie/story.

It's one of the few movies that actually would be better if it followed the source material more closely. But Hollywood won't let you have one of the main characters be r-slurred, weird future Jesus, and especially not the ending.
i can understand having that opinion of the OG bladerunner these days, it was before my time too but you gotta imagine that the subject matter was pretty wild for the movie goers of the late eighties.

The OG for being groundbreaking and far more visually striking given the comparative contemporaneous technologies (1982 vs 2017). 2017 had a few unexpected emotional beats and I didn't get that from the original at all (not a knock at it), though.
I like both movies but personally the sequel speaks way more to me. I know that it breaks and retcons several things from the first movie that diehard fans will say ruins it, but I do not care. To me it's much more of a standalone or a spiritual successor than a direct sequel, I do not care for continuity. And besides, I value it for it's themes and meta-commentary more than I do for it's story, the whole idea of finding what it actually means to be human, done so through all this obfuscation and subversion of expectations was done perfectly, and I say it as a person who hates the 'what if robots had souls?' trope in fiction.
Anyways, original is a good movie with a good story. 2049 is a great movie with an alright story but very interesting themes that when coupled together send you on an emotional rollercoaster. Definitely one of my favourite comfort movies for when I mentally break down
At that point just admit you don't like the movie lol, ain't no way you sit through several hours of non-engaging story just to have it 'redeemed' by a monologue at the end

Blade runner was boring and Blade runner 2049 was just bleh!!!! I especially hated how they shoehorned Harrison Ford into 2049, I am just so not interested in that universe.
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?

I never rated Blade Runner that highly. Looked nice.
The sequel was a much better film. Even Jared Leto couldn't spoil it.

blade runner is good bc of the dystopian cyberpunk future aesthetic. it wasn't overdone at the time it came out.
taking a film noir gritty detective shit and putting it into that setting was kino.
Also Rutger Hauers tears in the rain monologue at the end is one of cinemas greatest moments. And he ad libbed that shit.
