Let's talk about True Detective seasons 2 and 3 (total spoilers ahead)

I spent the past two days binge watching both seasons (3 and then 2). I saw s1 4 or 5 years ago.

Season 1 was probably top 10 if not top 5 TV kino for the whole decade. I don't think much discussion is warranted on that one.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17059198600630672.webp https://media.giphy.com/media/6s3HtZfGOaqUU/giphy.webp ifyougettheopportunityyoushouldkillyourself.mkv

Season 2 - What the frick was that ending? It felt like they killed both of them without much of a reason and there was no payoff. They still could have reasonably done this if there had been some sort of payoff, but there wasn't. Every single moid main character was killed off, along with most of the minor ones, and the girlbosses were the only ones that survived. I don't actually think this was a woke thing, just weird writing. Plus all the usual complaints about the directing and general midness of the whole thing. Pre-sobriety Ray is literally me though, and Vince Vaughn urban warfare was fun at times.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/17059198602857828.webp

I did notice that the raven mask character and several of the plot points surrounding him and otherwise in the show seemed to be lifted straight from the Hotline Miami vidya franchise.

https://i.rdrama.net/images/1705919862284739.webp

Season 3 - Return to form. First half felt almost as good as season 1, but the 3-layer simultaneous separate timelines felt excessive and confusing at times and I wasn't as happy with the second half. The bipoc main character was fine and didn't feel forced. Grace Gummer's (I assume everyone here has seen Mr Robot) sister is in it and their faces are similar enough that I briefly thought it was her. Overall pretty good but not as good as season 1. The dementia stuff was kinda mid but they mostly pulled it off and the fake death was decently done as a plot twist, if not in actual delivery.

Season 4 - Haven't started. I'll probably binge it at some point after the entire thing is available online, mostly because of gilfmode Jodie Foster (she has aged impeccably).

Yeah on one hand it was kinda interesting that it /wasn't/ a libertarian conspiracy but on the other hand it would've been more satisfying if it had been something similarly large-scale.

Season 2 was written to be about bohemian Grove pedos but the feds stepped to Pizzaman and cucked him

They made him use season 3 to shit on people who learned about libertarian symbols and stuff from season 1, had the BIPOC do it, and then the ending was "the kidnappers were benevolent"

I was like 16 when I saw Mr Robot lmao; didn't say it was a masterpiece (s1 of that was unironically good tho)

It was a return to form in terms of aesthetic (rural south instead of urban Los Angeles) and anachronistic presentation.

I actually went into it expecting the bipoc MC to be totally yassified and wakanda'd etc but except for some throwaway race lines and scenes it really wasn't that bad. I agree the dementia part wasn't as well done as it could've been.

Honestly it was so boring that I don't even remember anything about it :#tayshrug: anymore. Just the dementia part because I seethed about that to my friends, who all also hated it 🤣 to varying degrees

That lead neighbor in S3 is almost as bad as the one from Tenet lol

I mainly remember that the "murder" turned out to be one of the stupidest fricking things I've ever seen on TV, and then r-slurs claiming the show wasn't really about the murder anyway. Okay cool, but why make it stupid?

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

You're right about it being kinda boring; I saw it literally less than 48 hours ago completely sober and I'm already forgetting details. As I said, I liked the first half or so of the season but the second half was kinda bad (dozens of minutes of watching literal senile boomers fumbling around and forgetting where they are, and too much uninteresting time spent on relationships mostly irrelevant to the plot).

The bipoc actor wasn't great at acting (merely adequate) but in terms of how his character was /written/, it didn't feel like a Wakanda or Lawd Dem Rangz situation where I was being forced to see as many bipocs as they could fit on the screen solely for the sake of seeing bipocs. He wasn't the best choice for lead of the season tho. The white guy pulled off his character a lot more convincingly.

it didn't feel like a Wakanda or Lawd Dem Rangz situation

You're probably right because I don't remember :#jannybell:ing about it :#tayscrunch:

The (simple) theory I buy on S2 being so different from S1 is that they just didn't want to make the same thing but with different people in it. And I kinda get it. I mean look at how S3 turned out :#marseyoperasmug:

And I just can't imagine how :#marseyeyelidpulling: inducing S4 is gonna be :#taystop:

Exactly, s3 almost feels like they overcorrected back towards making a clone of s1 and then made the resolution of the crime really underwhelming to compensate for the overcorrection.

I'm holding judgement on s4 and hoping Jodie Foster at least makes it watchable.

I'd rather talk about season one. That shit was deep and it was right in the money for how these child sexual abuse rings play out. They even had the libertarian spiral at the end

The problem with the later seasons of True Detective was calling them True Detective. If they had called it something else, we wouldn't be automatically comparing it to season one. There's was no way the following seasons were going to live up to season one.

I also like that mchonagays character was almost like psychic and seemed to become aware of the increasing degeneracy of the town over the decades through physical senses like smell or whatever. It's been close to a decade since I watched it so i dont actually remember much now that I think of it but I did read a really good review of it that pointed out all the references the show contained including to real life events like the franklin coverup or the libertarian spiral symbol or whatever

The depiction of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallucinogen_persisting_perception_disorder was also pretty realistic (speaking from experience), if you've done enough acid in your lifetime sometimes you randomly see fractal patterns and moving dots in places that you shouldn't. I haven't seen that season in a few years myself so I'm spotty on the details including the degeneracy sense. Does he talk about that when he's explaining his alcoholism?

wow! nobody gives a frick about your feelings and why should they? I dont care about your week, your day, or even your fricking life. This is an internet forum and if you cant handle being here where there is free speech then shut the frick up and go home. It's 2020 if you are still crying about your fricking skin color you are pathetic. Theres more opportunity for BIPOCs to succeed than ever before, and if you are jewish then you could do us all a favor and choke on a peepee. If you aren't smart enough to learn and apply some knowledge blame your fricking biology and your brain cell count and mental capacity and not your skin color. Weak butt fricking babies. That's why you are at the bottom of the food chain now, that fricking weak butt mentality. No mental fortitude and apparently no capacity to learn and apply yourself.

Ali is a really strong actor and I was surprised by how good Dorff is too cuz he's been in some trash lol. Can't remember the name of the actress who plays the wife but it was so obvious that she was british because her accent slipped up every five minutes lol. Also idk what the point of the wife character is since we know from the start that she's dead in the present timeline but there's no interesting reveal related to it or anything.

Grace Gummer is so hot when she has red hair. I'm glad for the season 3 review because I skipped it after how shit season 2 is.

For Night Country, first episode was promising, acting was good, setting is interesting I think it had a great set up -- I just hate having to wait for the episodes on a streaming service the latest trend of doing a single episode a week is stupid and annoying.

:marseynosebleed2: :marseybiting: I was a little obsessed with Grace for a bit while she was on Mr Robot lol, I like redheads, tall foids, and foids with angular/"strong" faces so she kinda ticked all my boxes. Haven't really seen her in anything else though. You'd think she'd be landing roles like crazy being a Streep daughter purely due to pedowood nepotism :marseyshrug:

I haven't started s4 both because of the chuds saying it's bad (I won't lie, this influences my watch decisions) and because I can't see the whole thing at once over a weekend. Should I start it anyway? Might be nice to actually be forced to watch a show like a normal person for once.

The 2nd is more like a typical cop drama than the rest; there's less time-skipping and maybe-supernatural-maybe-not shit than the 1st and the 3rd. The 3rd feels much more similar to the 1st. I know nothing about the 4th. Watch the 2nd if you like cop-themed dramaslop and the 3rd if you really liked the spookiness of s1 and are willing to settle for something less good but passable.

Season 3 was good. I need to go back to 2 eventually.

Everything about night country seems off. All the acting is very wooden and weird, even poor Jodie Foster. I sat down to watch episode 2 last night and her looking at the bodies had such weird inflection. I didn't finish it yet

I think the writing is just bad. I noticed the same thing in episode 1 when they're at the research site and Jodie foster over emphasizes “cell phone” twice in two lines for some reason. It's also weird to causally refer to “cell” phones in current year like that
