Shows generally have 2 seasons no matter what unless they have absolutely garbage ratings and/or there's some kind of disruption (actor-director-personel drama, some kind of controversy, external production financial issues). It's some kind of weird convoluted production woo woo rule that I can't remember but swear is real and you should believe me because.

I think its contract stuff. you lock in everybody for time. So you dont end up in situation where people move to other projects when show is hit.
