I like Scorcese but Goodfellas is overrated. It's a completely generic "rise and fall of a gangster" movie.

Saving Private Ryan is also overrated, how many people remember anything about it except the opening scene and the battle at the end? I haven't seen Shakespeare in Love, but Saving Private Ryan is probably better than a movie called Shakespeare in Love, though.

Shakespeare in Love is exactly what it says on the tin. To my recollection it's decent enough for a romance film but I'm shocked to see it won oscars lmao.

Saving Private Ryan, sure, but how is Goodfellas generic? The best known gangster movies before then (like GF 1 & 2, Once Upon a Time in America) were long, drawn out, atmospheric, and the characters were mostly stoic and honorable. Much more opera than rock & roll. You can say Scarface invented the flashy, ugly, violent rock & roll gangster movie, but Goodfellas wasn't far behind.

This wiki bit on Goodfellas sums it up pretty well:

Scorsese stated his purpose in adopting Hill's 1985 memoir Wiseguy as Goodfellas was as an "antidote" to the mythicized version of the Mafia presented in The Godfather, saying he wanted to present Mafiosi as they really were. Scorsese stated in an interview that he wanted to show the Mafiosi "attitude" in Goodfellas, saying the Mafiosi in the film: "Don't give a darn about anything, especially when they're having a good time and making lots of money. They don't care about wives, their kids, anything". The British journ*list Tom Brook wrote in 2015: "Goodfellas had such an impact partly because it depicted the ruthlessness of mobster life quite differently from the mafia movies that preceded it".[36] The American columnist Jerry Capeci stated: "The Godfather romanticised the gangsters and made them out to be people who killed only for reasons of honour. But Goodfellas showed them to be what they really are: violent, murderous guys who killed just at the drop of a hat, who shoot people in the legs just to make them dance for fun".
