I think Shawshanks placement at #1 is just a testament to how inoffensive it is.
I've never heard anyone talk about how Shawshank is a masterpiece or mention it much at all, but by the same token Ive never heard anyone sperg out about how overrated it is. A bunch of people watch Shawshank, go "yup good movie
" rate it 8-10 on imdb and nobody is mad enough to vote it poorly

Kinda reminds me how loveless by my bloody valentine is in the top 10 for best albums all-time on RYM. It's a good album but it's really not a landmark album compared to other stuff in the top 10. It's in the same category of being good enough and appealing to a large demographic that by nature of averages it kinda just finds its way to the top. Pretentious moment here
but I do think on what that means in regards to the artistic merit of a piece of art. Is it better to be liked by many or hated and loved?

What the heck are you talking about? Loveless is the worst possible album you could have picked. There are no other albums that sound like loveless. Like, it's completely its own thing. Like, I can't think of a single other album that is so completely its own thing. I also have a really hard time believing there are people who listen to it and think it's just “good”. Like, its either “this is complete noise” or “this is the best thing I've ever heard”

Compared to top 10 maybe but for shoegaze it is the defining album of the genre. It shouldnt be a top tier album though. Good but not a masterpiece. Hated and loved is also a better metric than popularity in almost any instance.

I've long believed that tpab and gkmc have a sort of black panther effect to them where the average white liberal isn't willing to rate them lower than a 4.
Radiohead albums belong where they are. It is contrarian nonsense the way they try to rate in rainbows or kid a above ok computer.
