Apparently now the lightsabers evil jedi use are red because the dark side makes the crystal bleed or something equivalently r-slurred

I thought they just like get the lightsabers made that way, and there's cultural norms around who gets to use what (ie red = evil, green = master, blue = normal) and its used as a status symbol. What is this?

That retcon has been around for a while, I think it started with the sequel trilogy? Basically you can bleed evil into a lightsaber crystal and turn it red.

Disney already destroyed lightsaber lore for this in the Ashoka novel a few years back where dark siders "bleed" crystals and make them evil.
But Acolyte took it to a whole another level by making them mood rings. At least in the comics Darth Vader had to attempt multiple times to achieve this with his lightsaber and kept failing because he wasn't dark side enough.
But the acolyte chick is super special and unique and more powerful than Anakin Skywalker because of black girl magic or whatever so she could turn her lightsaber red in seconds.
