Cheap, lazy Hollywood writing is to blame. Pretty visuals and a sweeping score cannot cover up all the holes and blemishes. All that glitters is not gold.

See, I can knockoff Tolkien quotes, too.

I liked season 2 but yeah the finale was meh. Not sure what they could have done though. Don't want to spoil it but not sure where they could have finished it where it would have been more exciting I guess.

The problem, as a lot of people have pointed out, is that they are swiping lines and scenes wholesale from the Jackson movies. So there's a ton of "remember this?" and "he said the thing!" going on which is just not good enough for what is supposed to be an all-original show. So they take lines said by Gandalf or Galadriel or Treebeard or anyone else from the movies and give them to their characters, often mangling the lines in the process and quoting them in a context where they don't fit.

They wanted the Siege of Eregion to be the battle of Helm's Deep, it's really obvious. But the problem is it's not, they managed to screw up their big battle (the troll was pointless after all the build-up) and the one good bit was when Elrond catapulted the Orc into the city wall. It was very funny even if it was very stupid (you're launching rocks at the people you are supposed to be defending). Luckily this one particular catapult was aiming low so it only hit the wall (with the Orc) and not dumped a ton of rocks on top of the defenders inside.

I hate this version of Isildur, I hope the ship with him on it sinks on the way back to Númenor (remember, the sea is always right!)

I agree about Isildur. I picture him as a badass manly man and he's a kitty in the show.

I also thought Sauron tortures Calumbribor (not sure how to spell that) for a lot longer. I need to read the book with all this info out of curiosity. We know that the orcs follow Sauron but I thought the switch was lame and didn't explain anything. Like why?

Also, Sauron IIRC creates the one ring while Calumbrimbor is alive and without his knowledge at Mt. Doom and they skipped over this part.

But again I didn't really like the finale but was entertained by other episodes.

Erik Kain, the critic, started off way back in season one of the show with "Hey guys, it's not so bad, give it a chance" and "I enjoyed this episode, it should get better from now on".

Then a few episodes in, he said "yeah, the writing is bad, they're screwing it up" and he's been critical ever since. So I respect that because he can't be accused of being a hater or a racist or sexist or the rest of the comebacks that the show put out about critical reception. And it's a lot better than the media outlets which were all "oh this show is so great" when it ran, then when season one finished the same outlets came out with "yeah it was rubbish".

His Youtube channel is fun because he's given up on the show now and is One Of Us Haters 😁 His point is "no, it's not because of the Strong Women or the Diversity that people don't like the show, it's that (a) it's not faithful to the source material whatever the showrunners may say and (b) it's just badly written, even as a generic TV fantasy show".

Personally, I think the last episode was the best of the season, the trouble is that they should have let the characters be like this all along and they gave themselves so much to do, they had to cram about seven storylines in to tie up loose ends so everything got about five minutes each. At least they finally stopped with the "Oh is the Stranger Gandalf or not?" shit, yes he's Gandalf, everyone watching figured this out the minute he showed up.
