Good list. I can't stand Mary though, she is tramp who fricks two different guys outside of marriage and always bullies Edith. She also played Matthew like a fiddle for his inheritance TWICE.
Bates is the worst imo. In the 1st season he was alright as the cripple before he started getting on with Anna, but then he just gets more and more annoying. Also the scene with Bates and Anna in bed is so gross
Barrow is cool, but I thought he was gonna have turnaround after he got rehired after the war, doesn't make sense why he just ate humble pie then immediately went back to being a jackass, especially against Bates who saved his butt after Barrow was outted as a garry.
I like Cora she had that one line in the first seasin where she tells Mary that Edith has less "advantages" lol basically calling her ugly. She also had the good line when to Robert after he loses the fortune she says like I will be fine Im american "have gun will travel". Which is OG as frick.
At the same time she was atrocious about Matthew and a b-word to Robert at times, moreso in the early seasons.
I like that both Mary and Edith are complex characters. Season 1 Edith almost ruined Mary's life with the Pamuk letter she wrote to the Ottoman embassy, she did it because Mary always bullied her (I have a feeling this is Cora's fault, at some point I even wondered if Edith was Rosemund's bastard daughter, that would explain a lot) but turns out poking a viper is never a good idea.
Mary reminds me of a more benevolent Scarlett O'Hara, arrogant, self-serving and obsessed with her family name and property. I say benevolent because Mary had some redeeming qualities (loyalty to her family minus Edith, actually cares for her staff) while Scarlett had none. The Marigold reveal to Bertie was Mary's lowest punch, that was the final episode so they had to solve it quickly but realistically I don't think Edith would ever forgive that.
Bates is the worst imo. In the 1st season he was alright as the cripple before he started getting on with Anna
Speaking on Bates, it my impression or him being a cripple is almost like a forgotten point in later seasons? There are entire scenes where he walks without his cane. I remember a shitpost on /r/downtonabbey where the Bates's later migrate to the United States and open a motel, then Mr. Bates dies leaving Anna to raise their son alone in the middle of nowhere. Considering all the pointless "Bates is a murderer" plots it could actually be feasible lmao.
Bates fixed the cripple thing when he goes to doctor in season 1 I think and given some device to fix it. Pretty stupid they made it such a big deal then its automatically fixed that easily in one episode.

Spreading lies on the internet and then reacting with glee when people take them seriously is no more morally defensible when the aim is to create 'drama' than it is when the aim is to smear a political opponent, undermine a political cause that costs your business money, or damage the reputation of an enemy. This 'the internet is the wild west' nonsense is a truly bizarre way to rationalise that kind of behaviour. Especially when we've seen this year how misinformation costs lives in the US and beyond. The dude who says 'in real life I am a democrat on the internet I am a misogynist blah blah' is an absolute moron. What he means is, 'on the internet I can be a misogynist, I can be a liar, and there's nothing anybody can do to stop me.' This idea that's not 'who you are in real life' is self-deluding teenage level nonsense.

Favorite downstairs: Carson, Mrs Hughes, Barrow
Least favorite downstairs: Daisy, Bates
Favorite upstairs: the dowager, Mary (she's a b-word but it fits), Robert, Edith.
Least favorite upstairs: Cora (she's always aloof), Lavinia (plot device)
Favorite side character: Doctor Clarkson, but Gwen comes close.
