Clueless management puts their "best people" on the franchise, the "best people" turn out to be all members of the cult that like every cult are very well connected so the franchise either bombs in which case they blame the chuds or it does moderately well because of the absurd amount of money wasted on marketing so management considers it a success even though it usually just breaks even. A fine example of that is the Wheel of Time that did pretty well on amazon, not that well though considering the hundreds of millions wasted and the fact that Reacher, a cheap as frick chud show, absolutely annihilated it.

If you work at a big company imagine that lady (or occasionally, that guy) who gets to send company wide culture emails about equity/awareness/inclusion/kindness/teamwork/diversity stuff every Monday, and relishes in it. You aren't sure what they actually do 80% of the time, but maybe it involves frequently browsing reddit and twitter on the clock while being located in a hustle and bustle city.
I figure hollywood is just soulless big companies and they have an entire meeting room of that person who get to make big decisions about the movie except even more narcissistic and self important as a side effect of cocaine
