What about Tolkien?

He’s okay. I get he came up with tons of ideas, but going off of The Hobbit, the prose is whatever and the songs aren’t my thing.

Haven’t read Lord of the Rings but I heard it gets lost in the weeds of extraneous lore, which is something I don’t like.

getting lost in the weeds is probably people talking about the lorebook written from his notes after he was dead lotr is fine

Depends on where your threshold for extraneous and lost in the weeds is. LOTR definitely has lore and history but almost all of it has at least some tie in to a plotline eventually.

The time has come for the Necromaster. The unleashing of the fourth joker's card. The arrival of The Great Milenko

I reallly like Brett Easton Ellis's prose, also he doesnt like to bend the knee on leftist politics. He is a great author and a based gaybro.

He also gave us Patrick Bateman

He's pretty hilarious. I liked when he drunkenly tweeted his coke dealer instead of texting, and him inviting Dasha on his podcast to say he had friends who went to Epstein island and it was "totally chill" was also a great moment

Never read anything by him because he's too hyped up.

/r/fantasy always has him in their lists when some r-slurred Redditor asks for "recommendations".

Trash.

He's really compelling whenever he writes about suffering and war. The Emperor's Soul, a short story, is legitimately good. Other parts of his writing is incredibly cringe, especially anything to do with romance or teenagers, he turns it into YA slop.

It's truly unfortunate that the only options for interpersonal relationship writing in fantasy are "Twilight-tier prude Mormon M'lady cringe" or "utterly degenerate mega-coomerism"

Jump in the discussion.

Yeah, his most popular series is mostly about suffering and war, and the parts not about that aren't great.

Not to mention most of the visible fanbase is incredibly r slured.

The Way of Kings is actually great and worth the hype one of the best book endings as well, can just read that and ignore the rest of the series, quality goes down in the later books. Also that book doesnt have much if any of this 'cringe' writing style.

worth the hype

I refuse to believe that.

God Rhythm of War sucked.

>Rehashed Kaladin’s suicidal tendancy

>Shallan’s part went nowhere

>No one gives a rat butt about Venli or her dead sister

>Dalinar sat on his butt the entire time

>Navani girlbossing Moash was a stupid ending to that arc

>Spent chapters setting up le epic Marvel crossover with his other books

At least Adolin’s parts were great.

Can’t wait for book 5 where Kaladin tries to kill himself again and everything is solved in 3 pages at the end of the book.

Hard to believe he actually made a subplot where Kalladin invents psychiatry and "mental health". It's like he's actively trying morph all the characters into 21st century Americans.

Kaladin gets suicidal at least once per book, you just gotta learn to deal with it

For those of you who are ASOIAF fans/readers, what do you think about Sanderson finishing the series if GRRM kicks the bucket before “A Dream of Spring”? I see this idea popping up on reddit every once in a while.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

No thanks, I'd honestly rather just read his notes or maybe one of his underlings could do it as close as they could. Either way, I'm pretty sure he's said he won't allow anyone else to finish it.

I mean he did a pretty good job on WoT all things considered

R-slurred bad idea.

Martins writing has gotten worse as the series went on but it's nowhere near as bad as sandersons. Sanderson also can't handle writing anything raunchy and GoT has a lot of raunchiness.

I would rope

Sandersons abysmal prose aside (GRRM isn't exactly the greatest either) they have completely different worldviews and treat their characters and stories in almost diametrically opposed ways, Sanderson would butcher it

Jump in the discussion.

He needs to stop trying to be funny, it's getting worse with every book. Elantris and Mistborn weren't trying to be quippy and they were his best books but as he hobnobs with the YA crowd and writes his garbage scifi series for 12 year old girls he's more and more trying to write funny reddit marvel quip dialogue. Lost metal was almost unreadable and stormlight is degrading rapidly. God help you if you try to read any of the side content like the one about the ~hilarious~ magic little girl with the plant powers
