I hate amateur literary critics so much it's unreal

BTW guys did you know that Starship Troopers was a very subtle and ingenious deconstruction of fascism? I bet you didn't, it's so subtle only a real scholar could pick up on it (you should watch my 12 hour video essay to fully grasp it). The author was actually laughing at the likes of you! :soyjakanimeglasses:

What I hate is when people go DeAtH oF tHe AuthOR and insist a book means whatever they think it means.

It's one thing to say, “I think this about the book”

It's more arrogant and r-slurred to say, “The book is actually about this. So says I. No I don't care that the actual author disagrees completely and entirely.”

While death of the author is abused, especially by wingucucks, It is very much real. Author's intentions are secondary to the story he has written.

If J.K. Rowling was claiming that Harry Potter is about killing FtM trains, it wouldn't suddently make it true.

I mean author intentions go into a story and serve to craft it in the first place, so they aren't separate from the writing.

Authors changing their minds later is a bit different. Like sometimes authors will insist something in retrospect usually as totally inorganic marketing (yeah uh my story was actually always about current thing whodathunkit)

But whatever they had in their heads when they were writing is part of their work same as the prose and permanently above any fan opinion or even the opinions the same author develops later.

True. They are two different things.

But, speaking of non-retroactive intent, some people are really terrible at getting their point across (like me) and their work can convey a completely different message than intended (or none). I would say my main point is that Author's interpretation does not automatically supersede other people's interpretations.

My example would be a story of a very shitty and selfish person that makes countless terrible decisions leading to his demise, and then the author comes out claiming that it's the story of how life is unfair. Most people would say it's a cautionary tale about the decisions you make, and the author is an r-slur.

Authorial intent dont matter. See George :marseycantsneed: Lucas. Do we allow retroactive editing of media?

that's a good example. Sometimes it's better to actively take the author's story away from them.

Or how The Matrix was totally a trans allegory the whole time.

Though unironically the latest bad Matrix movie works well as a trans allegory, featuring as it does a world where some people would much rather live in a world they know is a lie rather than face the unpleasant reality.

Imo the best defence of DOTA is that a lot of ‘intent' is subconscious.

The idea of a focused, knowing ‘intent' is often silly when it comes to right-brained stuff like poetry, prose, art. (Sure there's a basic plan but there's a lot existing beside that)

There's a reason art/writing gets compared to religious ecstasy. The realest artists frequently zone out during the process and funnel a greater impulse without really understanding. And it's why they often come across like idiots in interviews. It's all intuitive.

Speaking from exp, I'll often write something, and look back at it later and see a bunch of themes/subtext/killer imagery I never recognised.

Sure there's room to bullshit about this, and I don't like a lot of the overt subjectivism associated with DOTA types. DAE craft isn't real and weebslop is better than Shakespeares? (/r/characterrant) but there's a lot of validity to the concept.

Musicians are the absolute worst at interviews. Just say you're an idiot savant and walk away from the mic. I could not possibly care less about how great it was working with some producer I've never heard of who is probably also sexually harassing you.

T. Modern biblical interpretation

Hmm I don't think I like what this passage says so we can reinterpret it to mean something super nebulous so we can still do what we want

The people who write things (not just the bible) meant something by them, and saying "I am going take my own meaning from this passage" is one thing, but implying that there is no definite meaning meant by the writer is just silly
