Redditoids react :soyjaktantrum:

That's funny because Joyce Carol Oates's Twitter feed, at times, seem like vignettes from Twin Peaks The Return

:soyjakanimeglasses:

"she just doesn't get it bro. " :marseydisagree:

What's weird here is that a lot of her own work is surreal, has many layers of reality and people who question their own sanity, she uses satire in dark ways, she has been an English professor for decades so presumably knows how to analyze others' art and does so well with Lynch's other work. I'm just not sure what her payoff is in repeating the “brain damaged” line (which seems inaccurate and mean-spirited to me), and it is painfully obvious that she doesn't understand either melodrama or satires of melodrama.

David lynch hates words. Words are her element. Makes sense she doesn't like his dialogue.

If words are her element she should use them better.

These people genuinely think they're some sort of enlightened souls just because they enjoy David Lynch. :marseyeyeroll:

I think there are two kinds of audience (broadly speaking, obviously); the kind that see something that triggers their imagination and sends them into a kind of imaginative engagement with what they are seeing; and the kind that expect what they see to do the imagining for them. Both are valid modes of reception, but the first has the advantage of including the latter in what it can appreciate whereas the second constantly needs to be convinced to remain engaged, and therefore cannot appreciate anything that requires them to imaginatively buy into what they are seeing.

Another user thinks she isn't good enough to critique Lynch. :marseyglancing:.

I'm not just saying this as a TP fan, in fact I've avoided saying it because of how it looks, but everything I've seen from her seems to be on the level of a third rate Chekhov or a third rate Shirley Jackson, depending on genre. If someone like Ishiguro said what she said, I'd be disturbed, but I wouldn't pretend to dismiss their ability. Obviously I'm in a minority about her.

Multiple accusation JCO being Dull and Pretentious :marseysmirk:

Dull and pretentious is exactly how I'd describe the majority of these tweets.

Says the lady who exclusively writes pretentious slow dull excursions.

JCO is media illiterate as well according to these redditors:marseysurejan:.

The world is full of media illiterate people.

:marseyyikes:

Serious question, who is this woman and why should I give a flying frick what she thinks of Twin Peaks? Her tweets read like a crazy old lady with dementia who should have had her phone taken away.

Old senile lady who posts bullshit opinions a lot. She posted her foot one time and it is truly gross

:marseypuke:

Anyway, lots of "literally who?" comments by the "media literate" intellectuals on /r/DavidLynch regarding JCO. Lots of seethe in the quote tweets as well :marseycope:.

Atlanta is a solid 10/10 too. I think comedy-drama strikes the right balance of tones for me. I also really enjoyed Master of None S1/S2. S3 can be thrown in the trash.

Yes it is. Unfortunately since some b-word tried to "out" Aziz Ansari as a s*x-pest (he's just awkward). He felt he had to change what was good about Master of None to atone for his sins I guess. S1&S2 come highly recommended though.

Me and a buddy went and saw Inland Empire in the theater, and that movie was so completely bizarre that people were walking out halfway through. It was like Lynch cranked up all of the quirks he was known for by 1000% and made the most baffling, incoherent thing you could ever watch. I found it deeply unpleasant, but I also felt like I got what I paid for. It's not like I didn't know what Lynch's deal was before I went.

That's like all of his work since lost highway. It's all been pretty nihilistic despite his reputation as an affable quirky guy

Jump in the discussion.

Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive and Inland Empire are all about how hollywood is a (probably jewish) conspiracy to funnel women into the porn industry. He has to hide it behind abstraction cause you're not allowed to say any of that outright

You either watch twin peaks and enjoy it 100% or think it's completely stupid and has nothing worthwhile. I've seen very little inbetween.

The fricking seethe from both sides thinking they're gigabrained for their opinions is fricking always good.

Look at the fricking posts on the fricking twin peaks subreddit of everyone soying out over the fricking YouTuber who came up with a fricking theory that explained the fricking whole show.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Which is funny because from everything I've seen of Twin Peaks. While there is some stuff that is plainly represented, it seems to be more focused on evoking a certain feeling or emotion. But people can't just enjoy things for what they are. They HAVE to know what it all means, almost neurodivergentally so. Just to prove that, yes, I am smart for understanding this.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I agree. After watching mulholland drive multiple times, I thought the same thing, that trying to find a plain meaning to the narrative would be like looking at an abstract painting and trying to reduce it to the everyday objects it may or may not depict. Sure, you could do that, and some people might even enjoy taking everything literally all the time, but they're kind of missing the point.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Mullholland drive is abstract cause you can't just come out and say that the jews use the allure of hollywood to funnel women into the porn industry

I don't disagree necessarily. I've seen very few of Lynch's works but I respect the man's ideas and vision since so much of the media I like is directly inspired by Twin Peaks. He's definitely a master of the visual medium.

That being said, there's a huge subset of pseuds that LOVE Lynch. So much so that I wonder how many have actually engaged with his work? Especially since a lot of it is intentionally obtuse. And just say they do to seem "smart".

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

Being a Lynch fan is easy because you can capitalise on the "Lynch isn't supposed to make sense, stop looking for meaning bro. It's just supposed to be like an experience, like being on acid maaaan" sentiment and accuse anyone who asks you to articulate/elaborate your thoughts on his works as being a narrow minded plotcel.

You see it with comments like this.

I think there are two kinds of audience (broadly speaking, obviously); the kind that see something that triggers their imagination and sends them into a kind of imaginative engagement with what they are seeing; and the kind that expect what they see to do the imagining for them.

self-aggrandizing bullshit.

Jump in the discussion.

No email address required.

I feel it goes both ways. From interviews and quotes I've seen of Lynch, he generally doesn't actively try to "mean" anything just bring about images and concepts and connect them together like a dream.

I do think people look for more meaning than there is meant to be. However, you're right in that you should still be able to explain how and why you feel the way you do when you engage with a piece of art, instead of feigning "you're not supposed to get it bro whoa.."
