Sounds like he was pretty successful, but just couldn't stop thinking about the people better than him

Yeah that's exactly what he was as far as i can tell. Talented guy but less brilliant than he thought he was, which always makes for the funniest kind of person

the synopsis of his first novel sounds like him

This is a novel of the last 36 hours in the life of Julian English. it is a novel that explores the life of a man who is bent on self-destruction but is not consciously aware of that. Julian English has all the outward signs of success but inwardly is racked with self-hatred. He owns a Cadillac dealership in an affluent small town in Pennsylvania. He lives on the best street, belongs to the best clubs and has access to the most influential members of society. And yet he wants to destroy himself. He takes too much money from his business to support his affluent life. He has borrowed money from Harry Reilly, an influential businessman, to support that business and squandered it on unproductive assets. The business still cannot generate the cash to support his chosen life and he realizes that he will have to borrow yet more money..This leads to a downward descent into even more excessive drinking and a succession of violent self-destructive actions.
