Skill issue. Or you can just order SMT assembly with the pcb, it's real cheap nowadays.

You can get some nice aesthetics if you're using through-hole components and a beige PCB, too. I always wanted to make a nixie clock like that.

It is a skill issue but they are flimsy. I was replacing switches on a mouse PCB the other day and without even using a desoldering gun, just wick, two pads lifted off. They're just so delicate.
