How much better is SDXL compared to SD 1.5? I already have a few models that I like, and I don't want to shake things up too much by changing to SDXL.

overall I consider it worth it, still worth going back to 1.5 though sometimes.

SDXL is very good for inpaint finishing pieces

SDXL is technically better, it just took a while for a good base model to come out due to the censorship. Its heavier on VRAM and has less resources right now, so that sucks. What it does know it does far better with less effort than SD 1.5. I have to do less in painting to unfrick hands.

On the other hand 1.5 has better resources, and I've had bad luck getting SDXL ControlNets to work, unlike with 1.5 where they work great. So, I've been doing what TFT suggests of SD 1.5 for the initial passes, and SDXL for inpainting.

I see. I guess I will stay on 1.5 for now, and wait for more SDXL resource, then.
