I just barely got started replacing sprites. It's a total pain in the butt, but fun. You can tell I haven't gotten around to replacing the squished goombas.
I have some general ideas for what to replace the bad guys with but not all of them. If you have any ideas for anything, just throw them in here.

Yeah. I watched a video to hex edit the ROM for each item's color references, but more than one items draws from common pallets, so other stuff in the game will get reslurded

It's odd, you can edit the sprite with up to 4 colors but the game hard-coded them to established ones that belong to a group of sprites. Needs more hex editing but may cause undesired weird colors of other things.

That'll be tricky. There are sprites for each letter of the alphabet. "Mariox and "Luigi" are hard-coded elsewhere outside of the sprite file. I could alter the letters themselves, but it would cause tons of other errors elsewhere.
I'd have to learn where those exist in the rest of the ROM.
