I used to watch tons of videos on /r/wpd and not feel a thing. I was depressed and contemplating suicide. Now I can't even stomach watching those videos. Glad I'm not in that place anymore. It really is fricked up.

Were you a teenager by any chance? When I was a teenager, gore and stuff didn’t faze me at all and it was edgy and cool and shocking. Now I can’t stand any of it. Even hated the low-res semi-funny stabbing video I posted earlier. Still haven’t watched the Christchurch video.

Same. When you're that young, you literally feel invincible and think nothing can kill you. You've got your entire life ahead of you which is so long!
Then you grow older and now you're in your late 20's - 30's, and you're now for the first time experiencing health issues in your life, due to growing older. Mortality starts to actually kick in, and you realize that you are just some normal human being that isn't invulnerable. All that shit we watched when we were young, now resonates differently, because it keeps reminding us that we're getting closer to dying.

Oh I’m almost completely at peace with my own mortality - thank you Jesus 🙏🏻 - I just don’t like the thought of it happening to other people is all. Everyone in those videos is someone’s mom, dad, son, daughter, spouse, sibling, whatever. Everyone watching is sitting in a dark room consuming the worst day of that person’s life and likely a great many people with any sort of relationship with them’s lives too, and they’re doing it just for their own entertainment. Bingeing the stuff. “22-year-old daughter and fiancé slowly dismembered by cartel after blowtorch treatment” followed be “2nd grader eviscerated by gangbangers over brother’s drug debt” and then maybe some “single father electrocuted in puddle, 3 kids - ages 3, 8, 14 orphaned” or if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, “gunman shatters a dozen families because streamer mispronounced his name last night.”
These are profoundly defective people.

I think it's more of a physiological thing. Empathy seems to develop last and while I was never into watching fricked up violent stuff, I remember having some thoughts that I'd consider now to be pretty strange simply because I didn't really understand how people function and how that effects the world as a whole, and I got more realistic about people sometime around early to mid 20s.
Probably half the stuff we make fun of on rdrama tbh are just people who are still at that age and don't have the ability to understand why the political beliefs that they're pushing are so absurd.

I wouldn't say it fricks me up or disturbs me deeply, but it always ruined my whole vibe, because funny cats just don't seem as funny afterwards. Oddly, it did have less impact when I was a bit depressed, and I would play the gif a few times just to understand what I was looking at instead of just immediately noping out.
I still can't imagine looking for that shit on purpose though
