I'm starting to think this hurricane might be the biggest case of nothing ever happens in recent history. I've been battered with claims of "STAY AND YOU WILL BE GUARANTEED TO DIE DIE DIE", "LITERALLY ZERO CHANCES OF SURVIVAL", or "BETTER WRITE YOUR NAME ON YOUR ARM SO THE RESCUERS CAN ID YOUR DEAD BODY".

Anyone I spoke to was talking about all the r-slurred floridians that think they are immune to storms because they lived through 124 of them already and how they were absolutely WRONG this time and THIS was definitely the gigastorm that will finally end their hubris and their lives.

The dramanet polls and bets were flooded with majority estimates of deaths in the region of THOUSANDS and many others believing deaths will be in the region of hundreds.

Yet here we are at the tail end of the storm - high winds are just about dying down on the most eastern coastal islands of Florida - rescue services have had access to the storms trajectory for a few hours and the grand total of reported deaths is...

3???????

If there aren't 1000 dead bodies on Meritt island (only remaining place off the coast with hurricane warning in place) then I'm confirming it as a :#marseynothingburger: and may just start denying climate change is even real

If you were in the storm surge zone you were in trouble, but Florida is Florida and can deal with heavier winds for the most part

It also helps that the storm started losing lots of momentum on its way in. Its structure when it hit 180mph would have been devastating. Usually there's a "dirty side" of hurricanes but this one was almost perfectly symmetrical for over 24 hours to the point all sides were dirty

Also compared to Helene this hit places that expect hurricanes. Helene was moving rapidly with a large wind field and massive precipitation that brought heavy wind and rain to places that usually get dying hurricanes that are tropical storms at best by the time it gets there. It was a perfect storm of bad ingredients being brought to unexpected locations compared to this one

There's still going to be plenty of devastation though, there was a lot of rain ahead of Milton and saturated grounds is what fricked up Houston when Beryl, a cat 1, came by earlier this year

This is how it almost always goes. Ypu just have to realize these r-slurs in non hurricane states have no idea what theyre talking about.

What really bothers me is when theyll look at something like flooding and say "oh they should have just paid more taxes for infrastructure" when a city has been drowned by 40in of rain. The north east drowns in like 10 inches

Man fails to suffer any ill effect in a water-tight, buoyant object during a mild rainstorm

non-issue here
