Over the course of a year and hundreds of candidates I presented, I've managed to place just one developer in a company.

However, most these companies were happy to change their social media profile to a solid black image or black lives matters. They sent memos, they organized lunches, even sold merch and donated. But hiring, that was too much to ask. A lot of graduates told me they never even got to do a technical interview.

Those DEI programs like to produce a show. Something visible that gives the impression that important work is being done. Like Microsoft reading who owned the land where the campus was built [2] in the beginning of every program. It eerily reminds me of "the loyalty oath crusade" in Catch-22.

I was the only "no" vote, but due to the position, I would have been mentoring her. They discussed hiring her anyways and I told them I refused to teach somebody from scratch since that wasn't my job. They wound up passing on her but I have no doubt that if somebody with less of a spine was in my position she'd be working there.

It really opened my eyes. Some of the teams there were 50% women (with a woman manager making the hiring decisions) and while I think some women are perfectly good at software dev, you just don't get to a 50% ratio without scraping the bottom of the barrel. My current job is much better. We have like 10% women programmers but the ones we have are actually good, which is why we only have 10%. And even we do gendered stuff like sending people to women-only career fairs to get applicants.

yeah tbh with the numbers in the industry the way they are, I feel like 20% women engineers is a "good" ratio. :marseysigh: My team has seven devs with two women (plus me, but I don't know if I count because I spend way more time in meetings and making slides about OKRs than writing code these days).

And TBQH you don't know if that girl might have become a shit-hot engineer. It's not your job to train her from scratch, but if someone did, she might be great. Some people are rslurred and some people are just green, and you can usually figure it out which in a couple months.

I think things like black girls code (hey black lives matter!) are good AKSHUALLY and they should do more of that instead of hiring token minorities and setting them up to fail.

yeah I mean maybe she was a late bloomer lmao but let's be real bb she just graduated a 4-year ABET-accredited program and she clearly was at the level of like an incoming freshman, that b-word ain't ever gonna be a "shit-hot engineer". She might, after years of training, reach the level of "mediocre".

And there were definitely people at that company in that position - they had like 20 years experience but they were still shit at their jobs and had serious trouble implementing anything beyond trivial. They were always the most frightened when layoffs rolled around because they knew full well if they got fired there was zero chance they'd get a job as a senior developer elsewhere.

Software engineer unemployment is <1%, full is ~3% so many people are employed who shouldn't be because companies know they wont be able to replace them. Its been like this since BLS gave us our own labor classification in '96, didn't even fall below full employment during GFC. There are 40k more new SWE jobs created in the US every year then there are people graduating with SWE degrees.

No one with experience doesn't have a job because of diversity hiring. Its only hard to get a job if you are a total r-slur or live in CA, all the companies are fleeing CA.

We're seeing this shift happen in quite a few different companies although nothing as extreme as what is happening at Meta.

I think the reality is that companies are realizing that cultivating progressive social justice oriented work cultures is actually bad for them. It hurts company morale because now you have radicalized employees "bringing their best selves to work" and "standing up for what's right" causing huge disruptive slap fights in your work place. A personal example of this at my company (a video game company) where a bunch of left wing employees suddenly demanded that we remove all police oriented cosmetics from our store because of BLM. Theyve also ranted about any work relationships with countries like Saudi Arabia and pushed for us to create more :marseytrain: characters in our game even though the vast majority of our players come from outside the US.

These turned into huge internal slap fights on slack where they openly called coworkers racists and bigots for disagreeing with them and company leadership was obviously too afraid to try and step in and tell them they were wrong to avoid any blowback.

You just can't have a cohesive work environment with these fricking pathetic losers working for you. But the DEI strategy is built around encouraging these kinds of employees in your company. It just doesn't result in the actual profits that these companies must have thought they were going to get.

In my opinion Zuck never liked the changes that were more or less enforced by the culture wars of Trump's first term and 2020. I thinks less about ideology for him and be just didn't want to pay for the moderation. And his steps didn't really provide any benefits to him, the Democrat aligned media still went after him regardless after bending the knee to them and Rightoids hated him too for censoring Hunter's laptop and Coof shit.
