casualty as a term in military usage, is a person in military service, combatant or non-combatant, who becomes unavailable for duty due to any of several circumstances, including death, injury, illness, missing, capture or desertion.

it literally just means someone becoming unavailabe for duty do to factors of war.

majority of casualties i would presume aren't permnanent maimings, especially considering in all wars the high rate of desertion. Desert yum
