I was thinking about this the other day, and I noticed something rather striking. A lot of Fetterman's campaigning has been emphasizing that Dr. Oz lives in New Jersey, which for in-jokey reasons lots of PA people look down on.

Now, it wouldn't fly with Democrats to point out Oz is a Turkish muslim, i.e. an "outsider" - all too racist and islamophobic, you understand. But laundering that as "He's from New Jersey" lets us psychologically launder that disdain for outsiders as mere inter-state rivalry.

I went to grad school in PA and have a lot of friends who still live there. I asked one of them why the state would elect someone who is almost functionally r-slurred at this point and is a complete LARPer over someone like Oz who, while he's a richfrick, is at least smart and knows how to say words. The answer I got is what you said, which is many people know Fetterman is a joke, but they really don't like Oz being a carperbagger, and from NJ of all places. That and some R's are still salty over the primary, which split them into three camps.
