Virginia Mother Charged With Murder After 4-Year-Old Son Dies From Eating THC Gummies

A mother in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, faces felony murder and child neglect charges after her 4-year-old son died from eating marijuana-infused gummies earlier this year.

Investigators said Dorothy Annette Clements didn't get help soon enough for her son, Tanner Clements, when he was found unresponsive on May 6 at a home they were both visiting.

Tanner Clements died two days later.

Dorothy Annette Clements told a police detective that her son ate half of a CBD gummy and that she called poison control and was assured that he'd be OK, according to search warrant documents.

But the detective said she found an empty THC gummy jar in the house and toxicology results showed Tanner Clements had extremely high levels of THC in his system, documents say. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana that gets people high.

An autopsy found that THC caused the boy's death.

Investigators said he might have survived had Dorothy Annette Clements gotten help for him sooner.

I hate stoners and don’t frick with weed, but I’ve seen studies for LD50s of THC and that shit is like crazy high.

The terminology seems a bit off in the story, too. Kid ate a CBD gummy or a THC gummy?

Or the whole jar? Which shouldn’t be enough to kill the kid, anyway. I mean, it would be a horrifying experience, though.

The article has a link to the original FB post from the police department, good for drama because people are pearl-clutching on both sides.

Fat Virginia women have gone into full “won’t someone think of the children” mode, and disgusting stoners have gone into defense mode that someone attacked their favorite (and only) hobby.

Keith Humphreys, a former adviser at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, told the outlet that coroners occasionally conclude a drug was the cause of someone’s death if it’s detected in their system and unaccompanied by other clues.

“There’s always some imperfection in these kinds of assessments,” he added.

In response to the reports of the Louisiana woman’s death, the executive director of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative told Insider “there is a theoretical THC limit that could lead to an overdose...but it’s basically impossible to consume a level that high.”

Eh, sounds like r-slur local government employees went “Oh well, kid has weed in his system, must’ve died from that!”

According to the Merck Index,[28] the LD50 of THC (the dose which causes the death of 50% of individuals) is 1270 mg/kg for male rats and 730 mg/kg for female rats from oral consumption in sesame oil, and 42 mg/kg for rats from inhalation.[29]

I mean, kid would have had to have eaten more than a pound of pure THC, even if they were small.

My guess is that there’s something else. Looks like she lied to poison control, maybe, and the detective found an empty jar of unspecified “THC gummies”—were they shady grey market gummies or some homemade shit? Did they have other substances?

Did the kid have preexisting conditions and the THC triggered a cardiac event or similar?

In any case, I’m not sure what TTT prosecutor decided to bring a case based on that investigation and conclusion about the kid’s death, because it should be easy to prove that she had no reasonable cause to believe that even ingesting an edible would cause death.

Waiting for someone to pull the actual indictment or report of investigation, bc I want to see what that reasoning was.

Seems like the mom lied to poison control and said the kid ate half (whole?) of a CBD gummy, turns out the kid ate a whole jar of THC gummies, and maybe they were actually some knockoff Delta-8 shit too.
