Lots of people are scared of flying even though the chances of being in a plane crash are negligible. Living just past the end of an airport runway is what would scare the heck out of me. Most plane crashes happen on takeoff or landing. Relatively common causes include:

  • Engine failure on takeoff. Get off the ground just long enough to crash in a half mile.

  • Pilot forgot something really basic like setting his flaps for takeoff. Get off the ground just long enough to crash in a half mile.

  • Plane is trying to land but it's going too fast and can't slow down because there's problems with the controls/thrust reversers/brakes/etc. Skids off the runway and into the first building in front of it.

  • Pilot gets confused trying to land at night, slams into something near the airport without ever realizing he was in danger.

In commercial airlines this stuff basically never happens anymore but if it's just some dude with his private plane it's still entirely possible.
