My guess: he had managed to calm the schizo with a weird social ritual, but the sight of the police shattered the calm. You can sometimes mollify schizos by emulating a normal interaction. If the illusion is punctured, though, they get real angry real fast.

Police knock, dude drags him over and said act normal (I'm guessing?), Paul smiles cuz police are finally going to end this shit. Also he probably drank a couple whiskeys.
I'm guessing this is when the attacker planned to make his threat. It's supposed to be a hostage situation. But Paul grabs the hammer and then Paul gets a serious fractured skull wound.
