I'd never heard of these things before but they're really interesting.

Each zooid is a multicellular animal. But it functions like a cell within the larger colony. So it's one more level of complexity over an ordinary animal. They even grow into totally different forms to do a certain function for the colony, like eating or reproducing or fighting other colonies.
