The article links this statistic to a different article which links to a tweet…which just has a bunch of women representing some activist org saying it.

The “different article” I mention above says, as evidence of this 14x figure, that 70 percent of victims in the 2004 tsunami were women. Which could be true, but their link to this is broken. And either way, 70 percent of one disaster is not 14x more for any climate change event. This makes no sense.

Men are taller, therefore less likely to drown in rising sea levels, Chud. Trust the science.

It's always fun tracing back sources and finding out they are either not true or completely misrepresented.

It's legitimately insane to me that my parents generation trusted the news. They unironically thought "If it's on the news or the government says it, it's the truth."

Vietnam and it's consequences have been a disaster for public trust and cohesion.

I would say that this postmodernist academic/activist world we're currently living in (which is reflected in this 14x statistic) is a relatively new phenomenon.

While embellishing narratives isn't itself new, the brazenness and pervasiveness is. This is what happens when narratives and agendas go unchecked. There's no pushback and accountability. People can say whatever they want, as long as their politics are correct.

There is lot of pushback, but no accountability because it all happens outside of the academy and thus they can all cry about a vague spectre of “anti-intellectualism” in defense.

Are you referring to the “Blocked and Reported” type Twitter crowd in terms of pushback? Do you see any pushback coming from mainstream normie sources?

General distrust in news being on the rise :marseyshrug:?

Although I saw a graph that said registered dems trust the news more now than they did in 2016 which is genuinely one the most depressing statistics I've ever seen.

Because Vietnam war was the first time news orgs covered the war independently from the government--and used this freedom to lie their heads off, about the Tet offensive for the central, most egregious example. Ultimately causing Pentagon to lose the war.

That's why I only trust billionaire politicians who make their own news outlets

It's crazy how something being "fact-checked" is now evidence that it's false.

Not that anyone will really care. By posting this bullshit gender war clickbait article this journo keeps her job. It doesn't matter what the truth is if it gets her money.

You don't hate them enough. You will never be able to hate them enough.

Sorry. Now that this narrative has been laundered into existence it's actually unscientific to dispute because it is fascist to not support journ*lism.

Makes sense, as 14x between any groups that live in the same place from any natural disaster/weather event doesn't pass the smell test.
