I've always wondered how the heck the holodeck is supposed to work given that it's shown creating massive areas that couldn't fit in that room and things that the people in it are able to physically interact with. Like when the characters are walking over uneven ground or opening a door what is actually happening
Wow, found someone doesn't even have a copy of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual. I don't think they ever say on the show, but their idea was that you were tricked into believing you were moving off the edge of the map but really you were pushing against a force field. It doesn't really make a whole heck of a lot of sense.

Yes, exactly. And it can use a transporter to beam stuff in around you and then beam it back out.
