More like the 20+ wealthiest European nations committed to the US (and some eastern Euro nations that takes defense seriously) defending them at all cost.
The answer to this is just as stupidly obvious as to what caused this dumb speculation in Trump's first term. Pay your share. Trump isnt going to pull out of NATO and even if he did, Europe has them money and population to easily counter Russia by themselves if they took defense seriously. Not going to cry about their free ride being over one way or another (though it would be idiotic for the US to leave).

Dont even need to. Thing about article 5 is you just need to treat the attack as an attack on you. You can, however, personally decide to not retaliate when hit, meaning every single member nation can get out of its defense duties by just saying "yeah we'll take the ouch and forgive them."
