Summers off and a pension, one of few options for people with a bad work history and a humanities degree, sense of romanticized purpose prior to actually having to deal with the children.
I think if you can land a spot in a an upper-middle class area it's probably not that bad. I know some Catholic school teachers who are all happy with it, and that's without the pension component.
In Oregon it's obscene. They were promised something like an 8% return on their investment so they're all rich when they get out. Also they have extremely good medical benefits. I had multiple teachers tell me that they got laser eye surgery that wasn't really necessary because it was free.
Many of the teachers here in Chicago are on a pension plan where they only have to pay 2% of their income into the pension. Oh they don't contribute to social security either. So they wind up paying less in taxes/pensions than literally joe schmoe without one. Of course the payout is based off them paying 9% of their income - the city needs to pick up the other 7% of their contribution plus 9% of the city's contribution, so they city contributes 16% and teachers only 2%.
It's such an insanely good pension. The downside is that teachers get paid the same at all schools here. So if you get into a competitive north-side (read: white) school, you're set, but if you get slotted into one of the south-side (read: black) schools, you have to deal with absurd nonsense. This is the primary reason why they're having trouble hiring more teachers. But the union doesn't want to admit that the south-side schools are dogshit and should come with hazard pay.

why on earth would anyone be a teacher nowadays
You can only save this by bringing back the cane, not for the benefit of the students but to let the teachers feel better
