The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister.

That just invites corruption and cronyism. It would make more sense for a set number of senators to be elected by each province, like the states do in the US or Australia.

Voters are extremely dumb, but at least they aren't all members of the ruling party.
