I've seen some cases recently where it's something really plausible, like a pilot who gets bribed by the Ukrainians to defect. There's quite a bit of precedent for that in the Cold War. And it must be much easier to get into contact with a pilot now, instead of just hoping some guy will steal his plane on his own.
