It's probably just all post production to make them sound good on albums. Their music has never been complex and what they lack in skill, they make up for with image. I like them, but have a bigger music dork friend who hates them out of principle since he feels they're not good enough to be how big they are. I got into them for a couple albums because I was a QOTS fan. Your friend isn't wrong about how they got famous, but I don't have any problem with that. "However you can" is the way anyone should get famous, there's no wrong path to it as long as you're not hurting anyone.
