Is this like the honkocaust? :marseytruck:

They should hurry up and make a robot train. How hard can it be? It only has to drive forward and backwards and not get drunk at the switch.

Self driving freight trains are still a long way off they kind of have it now with fto but it sucks.

Stopping a 20 thousand ton, two mile long train is pretty hard especially if it's cold or on a grade and those trains are stopping to go into sidings to let other trains go past way more than most people would guess.

If they tried to go ahead with self driving trains anytime soon there would be so many head on collisions with like tank cars full of shit that would ruin some town.

It will happen eventually but I'm not sure how AI will ever adjust for feeling how the air brakes on the freight cars are actually working because different trains with the same type of 200 loaded cars can have pretty wide discrepencies in how well the brakes actually work.

It's like the same brake system from 100 years ago or something one of the best inventions of all time where any rail car can be added to a train and the loco engineer has control of it's breaks by just connecting two hoses but it takes a lot of touch and feel to control.

Alot of places in North America too where the trains now are so heavy because the business model is make trains as long as regulations allow where once you are five miles over the speed limit that's too late to slow down and it's gonna go too fast and derail.

Sorry to long post but it is something I know a little about and the rail companies are also unimaginably evil there is no other union work force where management vs bargaining employee hatred is close to the same.

The industry standardized so long ago the problem now is improving upon the 100+ year old standards is almost impossibly difficult

I don't know what they could do other than adding a braking system that is controlled by radio communication from the locomotive to each individual car to move away from air braking which sounds like a nightmare to implement and would cut down productivity in large yards by like 1000 percent since you can't really switch off air anymore at alot of places.

Never really thought about the braking. Seems like it would be nightmarish to retrofit and then maintain brake sensors and other junk to make a self driving drain

It would work at first but then through neglect and failure would cause accidents

Yeah and sometimes the breaks can be too good which would cause more issues.

So far the FTO program which is like cruise control more or less to save on fuel has cost the companies more in fuel than engineers being in control at all times but I'm sure they are getting a ton of data at least but who knows.

Also a huge chunk of territory in North America is dark territory and you would need at least one person on the train anyways for the switches unless they want to spend billions putting CTC in 100 percent across all systems.

No that was an actual protest by like minded people and not an attempt at extortion by a labour cartel, so naturally the government cracked down hard on them. I doubt they'll do the same to a union.

If they are that critical, then they should be paid what they are asking for.

So just give them whatever they want anytime they ask because they're that critical? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Doubt they'd feel the same about the unions in oil and gas
