One of the proposals would forbid Washington's local government from banning right turns at red lights. Another would do away with the automated traffic-enforcement cameras that ticket D.C. drivers for speeding, blowing stop signs and other violations.

how are these bad proposals

Bicyclists want to cause more congestion so that biking is relatively faster. It usually gets hidden behind keywords like "traffic calming"' safety, bike " infrastructure" etc. They want to ban right on red because it allows a lot of additional cars through an intersection during inefficient lights. They want speed cameras because they add cost and heavily throttle traffic.

A city i was in turned all the 4 lane main roads into two lanes with massive bike lanes when they have snow on the ground for a quarter of the year.

Bicycles should have license plates because none of them follow the rules of the road. Instant free money citing them for blowing through stop signs and red lights.

too bad carcuck. I WILL drive my illegally fast electrified bicycle on the sidewalks and endanger pedestrians, and there is nothing you can do about it.

Besides, you don't have time to worry about this. shouldn't you be paying for insurance or parking space or renewing your subscription to heated seats, or refilling your tank?

This is illegal (though almost never enforced except against homelesses) in most places already. It is technically a crime for me to bike on the sidewalk here.

Automated traffic-enforcement cameras are a good idea. They free up police dept resources so they can address more pertinent crimes, and could also be considered a cost saving measure when compared to having a traffic officer camp out at an intersection all day. The people who oppose them will spin arguments like nanny state or how the cameras are racist or whatever, but the REAL reason people oppose them is because they don't believe the rules of the road should apply to them - they believe they should be allowed to speed and run red lights with reckless abandon.

For a brief period of time Montana highways had no speed limit and it was absolutely glorious.

Nobody actually follows them on freeways unless cops are running a speed trap; it's pretty normal to go 80mph in a 65 zone

This might be a regional thing thoughbeit, speed enforcement is probably more strict in denser parts of the country (ie the northeast)

Yeah, but that's the speed limit where I live, and people regularly drive faster than that.

I'd have more respect for the opposition here if they were all so honest.

Around my city the pushback comes mostly from progressives who argue that speed cameras are racist. First they claimed the cameras were placed in black neighborhoods to nab them more, but it turns out they're actually equally spread across the city. Now the current argument is that racism made it so the black-dominant parts of the city have roads that are "too straight" so they "encourage" speeding. Which doesn't make sense either because the whole fricking city is on more or less a perfectly square grid, I live in a mostly white area and every road is a perfectly straight line.

The incapable r-slurs behind speed cameras enforce the written speed limit, where the actual speed limit is that + 7, and often 15 on highways. And even then it's not unsafe to go faster (Autobahn).

If we raised every speed limit by 10 and highways by 20, I would support robopiggies.

I don't think there's any on the highways around here. In fact I can't recall ever seeing any on highways, but I certainly haven't driven on all of them.

Here they're used for city streets. tbh you really shouldn't be driving that fast on city streets, there's lots of pedestrians and cyclists and stuff so safety is more critical than on ie a highway where it's all cars going fast. Also highways are obviously divided roads but very few of the roads here in the city have their directions physically separated (although there are a significant number of one-way streets).

When I get caught by the red light camera, it's just a slip up and I was reasonably catching the yellow and driving safely in context of current traffic, when a black person or a teenager gets caught by a red light camera, they were driving recklessly and should be punished. Unironically.

Twitter people bullied them into believing that The Disabled need descriptions of images, pay attention and you'll see it in lots of places.

In reality, what you're supposed to for accessibility is provide a text-based alternative to the image. For the usual stock photo slop that is purely visual garnish, that means it should be null and describing it is just wasting people's time.

A swear DC is engineered to pull in revenue from these things. They could put traffic lights above intersections like every other civilized city in America but instead they put them on the on the side of the road then plant bushes or place signs in front of it, then put a camera there to ticket you when you don't see it.
