It's "virtue signalling" by the original definition, or "outbidding" as we said in boomer times. Everyone wants better healthcare and housing and stuff. Most people don't want to see Palestinian kids get blown up. So in order to prove that you're a true leftoid, that you're not like the normies, you have to believe something a little out of the box. Like "Hamas is actually good".

Also it's just kids instinctively picking the opposite of whatever their parents believe. Compare it to the 1990s in Korea where there was a generation of baby boomers who were really sympathetic to North Korea just because it was the thing their parents hated most.
