"Violence" is not merely physical battery. Violence is the violation of another. Schoolchildren sing "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words shall never hurt me." — it is the most subtle evil. Words, screaming, shouting, tantrums, gaslamping, emotional degradation, directed by the person one has placed the utmost trust in, whether a parent or partner — these are violence.
